What is Thermage?
Thermage is a non-invasive method for tightening your skin by delivering heat into the dermis and the fat layer. This heat triggers a wound response in the skin that remodels existing collagen and encourages production of new collagen. This tightens and smoothes the surface skin.
How does Thermage work?
Collagen provides the skin’s structural support. The problem is that as we age, our body produces one percent less collagen every year after we turn 20. That means by the time you hit 50, your body produces 30 percent less collagen than in your younger days. This decrease allows the skin to sag and droop, and it facilitates the development of lines and wrinkles.
Thermage delivers radiofrequency energy through the epidermis (the skin’s outer layer) into the dermis and fat layer beneath. When the RF energy reaches these two underlying layers of our skin it converts to heat. The body isn’t used to feeling heat in these layers of the skin, so it assumes there has been an injury or wound. It responds by “healing” the wound. The first response is an immediate remodeling of the collagen in the area. This produces instant tightening in the skin. Then the body gets to work producing new collagen to help with the perceived healing. This new collagen production makes up for the loss and it tones and tightens your skin. This collagen increase continues for up to six months.
Results
You will notice some immediate results due to the initial collagen remodeling. But these results will continue to build as new collagen is produced. Measurable tightening and contouring improvements appear gradually over a two- to six-month period. Most patients need just a single Thermage treatment to achieve the results they seek.
