When you were a kid, freckles were cute. Now, not so much. But Intense Pulsed Light therapy (IPL) can get rid of freckles, age spots, and other pigmentation issues.
How does IPL work?
IPL works on the same principle as a laser — light energy is absorbed by the targeted skin cells with color. The light energy is converted to heat energy that damages those darker cells. It’s the pigment in the dark spots that attracts the energy.
Immediately after treatment, the area is red and swollen, almost like a burn. Over the next few days the redness fades, but the brown in the damaged spots becomes darker and darker. Then the spot peels off. This process can take from 10 to 21 days.
Different settings, different targets
The IPL handpiece has different settings that filter the light into different ranges of the spectrum. By changing the setting, IPL can move from dark skin areas to rosacea, flushing, and broken capillaries.
IPL works great on the face but can also be used on the neck, chest, arms, and hands. Treatments are spaced every three weeks for the face, and every six weeks for areas on the body. It usually takes from two to six treatments to get the results you seek.
