At this time of year, everyone loves to peel those tasty little Clementines, as bags of them are everywhere you turn. But it’s also a good time to do a little peeling to yourself. Huh? A chemical peel at Saltz Spa Vitoria.
What are chemical peels?
Chemical peels use various chemical solutions to exfoliate (a softer term for peeling) the skin. Peels are classified by the peeling agent and the depth the agent penetrates into the skin. Peels can reduce fine lines and wrinkles; improve the appearance of mild scars; treat acne; and reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) caused by fluctuations in hormone levels.
How do they work?
Peels remove skin on the epidermis, the skin’s surface layer. They either expose new skin under the removed skin or prompt the body to regenerate new surface skin.
Peels are superficial, moderate, or deep, based on their degree of penetration. Lighter peels simply remove dead surface cells and lightly rejuvenate the outermost skin. They are easy to take and don’t require any recovery time. Moderate and deep peels delve deeper, down into the skin’s second layer, called the dermis. Both of these peels cause more discomfort and require healing time. There will be crusting, peeling, some itchiness, and general redness following these peels. They will create anywhere from three to 10 days of facial peeling, depending on the chemical used.
Results
Every type of peel leaves your skin smoother, softer, and brighter. Deeper peels can remove some wrinkles and creases. Most peels work the best with a series of treatments, anywhere from three to six. The time between peels depends on the aggressiveness of the peel and necessary recovery time.
